I've been doing a solo guitar live stream quite often on Youtube lately and get questions about how to practice chord melody. I always talk about diminished chords when I get asked about questions like that. Here's very simple idea of how we can put diminished chords into C major diatonic chords as a passing chords. Cmaj7 C#o7 Dm7 D#o7 Em7 Eo7 Dm7 Do7 Cmaj7 In this case I also think of C#o7 is a substitution for A7b9, D#o7 as a substitution for B7b9, Eo7 is another A7b9 from, Do7 is a substitution for G7b9. Those are either dominant or secondary dominant chords for diatonic chords like Cmaj7, Dm7 or Em7. BelowΒ is also an example of how I incorporate these in a actual playing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hUgv_d6RwI&t=14s
