Last week, I asked my band Woodsiders Collective if we can play add standard to a setlist. Trombone player Justus picked few ideas and this was one of them. At the gig I like to have a combination of songs, like modal ones and traditional ones with more changes etc. If everything is modal, it becomes a bit boring to me and vice versa. It also depends on the format / instrumentation. In NYC playing bebop / hard pop songs are more of musicians' choice rather than playing standards from great american song book. On a Misty Night is written by Tadd Dameron, so it still falls into that category while having sparse melodic movement on the A section. For this recording, I felt something have changed for chord plucking. I probably changed the angle little bit and feel different touch to the chord melody playing. It feels like chords are more ringing together now, I mean tone is more smooth when it's successfully plucked. I also added more compressor than usual so it also changed the attack as well. It's a subtle difference though, let me know if you notice anything. soundslice: https://www.soundslice.com/slices/pV13c/ Oh and one more thing, it contains Gb7 (maj7) chord where I played major7th on dominant chord. I heard Monk does this sometime so did Tadd played on the recording.
